The Curious Quests of Callophrys Rubi, my new middle-grade story is now available in a serial format (one episode at a time) on Kindle’s brand-spanking-new Vella app!
After 2,000 years, the sundering enchantment is fading, extinction threatens the realms, a young fairy struggles to understand her origins. Cally lives in Safyre Forest, a fairy-only world, and yet, distinctly non-fairy powers are emerging for her as she gets her wings. Why is this happening? Who is she, really? Will she be able to vanquish her self-doubt and complete her secret mission in time?
The serial reading experience allows readers to purchase “episodes” one at a time to read as you go and while on the go. Right now, it’s available on the Kindle App and Amazon.com. The first three episodes are free, so you can check out the story to see if you like it (all stories on Vella, not just mine). From there, you’ll purchase tokens that will unlock the next episode.
I tried out this new format for a variety of reasons. First, Cally’s story is longer than a traditional book format. And while I *loved* reading long books when I was young (the longer, the better), traditional publishers want you to keep them 200 pages or under. But with this new reading platform, page counts kinda go out the window… Yay! Also, I like trying out new things. I was an early adopter of the e-reader platform, publishing The Kangaroo Pouch on Kindle in 2012, when it first came out. I think it’s important to take the story to where people will find it, whether that’s a paper book, an e-book, or on your phone.
